So how does it work? Simply run the Wubi installer, enter a password for the account, choose some basic options, and click “Install”. Yes, it’s that simple. It’s not going to take any modifying of your partitions or boot loader. It just works like any other application. Yes, it’s that simple. If you don’t like it, simple uninstall it like any other application. Best of all, it’s free.

I’ve used it and to be honest, it’s great. Wubi is hassle free and extremely easy to use. Like mentioned, it’s extremely easy to uninstall and no need to worry about something going wrong.

What to know about Wubi

Below are somethings that you should know about Wubi before you try it out.

• Read the Wubi FAQ if you want to know how it works and answers to many of your questions
• To make it easier, pre-download the ISO and save it to the same directory where Wubi is extracted. That way, the installer doesn’t need to download it every time you run it.
• You can force Wubi to use a 32-bit verison of Ubuntu if you follow the previous step
• All you need is 256MB of RAM and an 1GHz or faster Intel/AMD processor is recommended for optimal performance. Installation requires 5GB. Bought your computer within the past 3 years? You should be fine.

PhotoXpress is another great stop for those looking for free stock photography. They currently offer over 410k photos that are available for download once you register for free.

So is PhotoXpress really free?

Yes, the only catch is you can only download one photo per day. Want to increase it? Then fill out your profile and you can download an additional 5 per day. If you want even more, connect your account with Facebook and it will grant you an additional 4 per day.

I’ll be trying it out as it seems an excellent resource as the images are great for using within posts, and layouts as well.

Getting ready to edit your template to make a website

In this part of our series you will start editing your template to make your website. Don’t worry, I’ll guide you every step of the way so you don’t get lost.

What do you need?

1. The BigSpaceLove template found on Free-CSS-Templates
2. A browser to open your website. (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox…)
3. A text editor to edit your website. Preferably one that supports syntax highlighting. Programmer’s Notepad is free and is what I’ll be using.

Start editing the template

Open up index.html using your text editor. If you remember the basic structure of a website we taught you can notice that it is the same way the html file is structured.

• The header contains “Website Title” and “Subheader, website description H2″ in this case
• The body is separated into a left section containing the content the and a right section containing the menu.
• The footer contains information about the person who created the template.

You will notice these sections are denoted with the following tag in the HTML document:

The <div> </div> tag

You can think of the div tag as a section within your HTML document. They will usually be named after the sections described above.

Making and viewing changes to your website

To make a change, simply save the index.html file at any time. Then open it using any browser. Once the page is open, you can refresh it thereafter whenever you make a change to the html file.

Changing the title of your website

Let’s change the title of our website. Currently it says Big Space. Look for the following code in the html file.

<title>Big Space</title>

It should be enclosed within the section. This section is used for placing information about the website such as meta tags, links to the css stylesheet, and the title of the site.

Let’s change the title to whatever you want. I’ll name it the following:

<title>Let's talk Binary!</title>

Now view the changes you have made using the steps I provided earlier. See what happened? The title of our website changed, this isn’t visible on the page itself but in your browser.

Editing the Header Section

Now let’s go ahead and change the “Website Title”. Look for the following.

<h1><a href="#">Website Title</a></h1>
<h2>Subheader, website description H2</h2>

I’ll be changing it to the following.

<h1><a href="index.html">Let's Talk Binary!</a></h1>
<h2>Eliminating the barrier between code and people</h2>

If you noticed, I change “#” to “index.html” above. “Let’s Talk Binary!” is encapsulated with the <a> </a> tag making it a link. Whenever you click on it, it will take you to the index.html page which is the current page your on.
It is also encapsulated with the <h1> </h1> tags, making it a header.

The <a> <h1> tag

The <a> seen is used to create a link to another document with the source being “index.html” in our case.

The <h1> tag defines headings. The values range from 1 to 6. 1 being the largest.

Now save and view changes. Isn’t this easier than you thought?

Getting started on your first website

Ever wanted to create a website but had no idea where to get started? No worries, I’ll guide you through the simple process and it will require no prior experience. Is it really that easy? After you complete my series of tutorials, it sure will be. We’ll be using the template BigSpaceLove found on Free-CSS-Templates to create a simple personal website similar to my personal website.

You don’t need to know anything. I’ll even make sure you understand the fundamentals so you can continue learning more on your own afterwards. So no, you don’t need to know how to design a web page, or even how to code one.

Why would I need a website anyways?

First of all, a website might serve a great variety of purposes such as the following:

• You may post your resume, CV, or portfolio online to attract potential employers
• Might want to share a hobby
• Promote a product you are selling or endorsing
• Start a community
• Simply to learn!

In reality, the possibilities are endless. It’s actually quite a good skill to have and it can pay off. While I was in highschool I managed to create websites and get paid pretty darn well for it since people think its more complicated than it looks.

If you are looking to simply learn, this is a great place to start. This will be a great hands on experience as you will be seeing progress rather quickly. It will also enable you to understand the fundamentals of the creation of a website.

How Dia Works

With Dia, you simply choose the type of chart you want to create. Then you are given an empty workspace with a toolbar with object. Simply drag and drop them onto the workspace. You can align to grid, place them in front or back, and even place text in them with ease. You can also create arrows to show the flow of data or relationships. Don’t worry, it isn’t a hassle to edit and modify charts in Dia. You simply need to click on the object and move around or delete as you please.

Remarks on DExposE2

So far its great for users who want more eye candy and want to use your PC with style. I currently use it on my laptop and haven’t found a reason to remove it. You should try it out. It’s very fast and doesn’t use a lot of resources.

Launchy is a free Window and Linux utility designed to make you forget about your start menu or desktop and does a good job about it! By default, Launchy displays over all your applications with a press of ALT-SpaceBar, then allows you to start typing in the application you want to open, and Launchy will start firing up suggestions, once you nail the right app, press enter and it opens! See why you never have to visit your Start Menu ever again?

Overall, Launchy is a great application to speed up your productivity. I’ve recently downloaded it onto my desktop and my laptop. Also, just make sure your mouse doesn’t get jealous because you won’t be using it as much anymore!

Why learn about a blog? They are popping everywhere on the internet and some of the top sites now are considered to be blogs. Did you know that? Many avid readers have never been exposed to a blog before and have been interested in this new experience. That’s why here at Talk Binary we want to educate you about them and show you how to make one in the process for those who want to share their wealth of knowledge without really knowing anything about web design! You really don’t need to know anything to start a blog! I’ll show you how.

What is a blog anyway?

A blog, short for web blog, is a website maintained by a “blogger” who wishes to share his experiences, hobbies, interests, passions and other information with individuals interested in the topic of the blogger’s choice. A blog stands out from a website as it allows the blogger to easily post entries on his/her subject which in return can be commented by the visitors to maintain a conversation providing feedback, and possibly more information on the related topic. In other words, a blog is something anyone can express their interests, passions, or hobbies. It can be related to an online diary. (Making a search on Google for blog brings up around 2.6 billion results!) – Source

Below are a variety of different blogs that I regularly read using my Google RSS reader. Descriptions after the break!

So what can a blog be?

About anything really. Many people have blogs for educational, personal, monetary, professional, and many more other reasons. Talk Binary is trying to be a blog about teaching you how to program while giving you tech reviews, software, and hardware information. Why? Because we love to write about the things we love.

So you can too start your own free blog! How? It’s simple and its free! I’ll post this on the next post in this series.

So who keeps up with these blogs anyways?

Many of these blogs are merely a team of “bloggers” who mainly want to share their knowledge with you! They can be teenagers, adults, seniors, and many other type of people! Some people simply love putting in some time every now and then and try to start a community with their hobby of interest by making a blog to attract readers with the same interest.

How popular are these blogs??

Some of these have up to 15,000 unique visitors per day! (15k x 30 days in a month = one heck of a lot of visitors per month!) Others even have over 20,000 RSS subscribers! In other words, thats one really big audience!

How many blogs do I keep up with?

You really don’t want to know! I use Google Reader to manage all my feeds. About 30-45 of them? So instead of visiting about 45 sites per day, I simply navigate through all the posts fed through to me using Google Reader! I’ll explain how to use Google Reader in a next post as well. And no, I don’t spend hours on it, merely a couple of minutes skimming to find what I really want. ( I receive up to 100 posts a day, but by simply looking at topics I end up reading about 6-7 completely. ) I subscribe to Gaming, Technology, LifeStyle, News, and a lot of other type of blogs. I like to receive a little of everything.
